Family Day at the LAC celebrates Lunar Fest!

Get ready for a day bursting with family fun and celebrations!

This upcoming Family Day, the Living Arts Centre will be buzzing with FREE family-friendly activities and artful programming throughout the building from 11am-5pm! This year, we are so excited to have Lunar Fest from Vancouver joining us to share their special interactive experiences to celebrate the Chinese New Year – which is the Year of the Dog!


INDOOR ACTIVITIES

LUNAR FEST MOON CRAWL EXPERIENCE - 11am - 5pm

(RBC Theatre)
Participate in this fun Family Challenge - work as a team to find the moon hidden in the ball pit!

LUNAR FEST YEAR OF THE DOG INSTALLATION

Search for the dogs - find the installation and show us your selfie skills by tagging @livingartsctr on Instagram & Twitter!

LUNAR FEST – LEARN A TRADITIONAL CHINESE GAME
Make a Shuttlecock & learn play this traditional Chinese game.

CRAFT ZONE
Dabble in hands-on crafts to build and take home, like your very own Model Magic Olaf from the Disney movie Frozen OR a personalized button of your favourite Minion from Pixar’s Despicable Me movies, & MORE!

COMMUNITY STAGE PERFORMANCES
Great lineup of local, community artists from dancers to musicians performing throughout the day on our Community Stage.

Learn How To Curl - ROCKS & RINGS PROGRAM – CURLING CANADA
Learn a true winter sport – curling! Curling Canada brings their Rocks & Rings program to you!

DISCOVERY ZONE
Catch some of our resident artists demonstrating mural painting, ceramics & more!

Warm-up from winter’s chill with delicious hot chocolate sponsored by Mother Parkers!

FAMILY TALENT SHOW - 2:00PM

Local talent will shine on the RBC stage! Cheer on and be inspired by local families as they showcase their talents. Musicians, singers and dancers – all will be featured in this family-friendly LAC Talent Show competition! A panel of guest judges will have the tough task of choosing a winner.

‘JUST LIKE MOM & DAD LIVE! 12:00PM

Join the audience or volunteer to take part in this exciting game-show in RBC Theatre! TV Hosts Sandy Jobin-Bevans and Kylee Evans host a LIVE question/answer round of Just Like Mom and Dad - an exciting remake of the 80’s hit game show Just Like Mom, a hugely popular part of Canadian TV pop culture. Presented by YesTV and MarbleMedia.

SHORT FILMS - 11:00AM - 3:00PM

Come watch short films from the National Film Board of Canada including Lights for Gita, The Chinese Violin, Jamie Lo - Small and Shy, At Home with Mrs. Hen and It’s Snow.

LUNAR FEST FILM SCREENING: THE WALKERS - 3:00PM - 5:00PM

This documentary follows choreographer Lin Lee-Chen and her Legend Lin Dance Theatre, exploring the origins of her dance, philosophy, and lifelong pursuit of the perfect aesthetic. Don't miss this visually stunning and beautifully shot film.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

FIRE BUILDING DEMONSTRATIONS & MARSHMALLOW TOASTING
1st Meadowvale West Scout Group will be onsite braving the frigid winter temperatures to offer fire-building demonstrations while toasting up some marshmallows for everyone to enjoy - yum!


LAC Gallery Exhibit - COMICS: The Road to Independence

The LAC Gallery is open throughout the day with its latest exhibition!

When we think of comics, our thoughts often turn towards the superheroes and strip cartoons of the mainstream market. But an alternative and independent market has been rising for the past 25 years, turning comics into an art form. Graphic novels, ‘zines and alternative comics explore the complexities of real life, pushing boundaries and transforming low art into literature.

Lunar Fest Sky Lantern Workshop

Learn about the cultural significance of Chinese sky lanterns in this hands-on workshop. Build Lanterns of Blessings while learning about Taiwanese-Hakka Lei Cha - a traditional beverage of cultural significance, popularly served to guests at family and LNY gatherings.

Lanterns made on this day will be used as part of a special lantern installation display for our Family Day event!
Join us for an afternoon of fun and learning!
