Open Mic LIVE, held at the Living Arts Centre’s in-house restaurant, LIVE, since January 2015 in partnership with Mississauga Arts Council, is showcased in this impressive 3rd Annual Best of Open Mic Concert.  Hosted by Tom Taylor, 10 of the best performers from previous Open Mic LIVE events will be performing at the RBC Theatre. The concert will showcase emerging musicians with an opportunity to perform in a professional atmosphere and gain stage experience in front of an appreciative audience.

Tom Taylor - Host 

Tom’s music career really began when he moved from his home town of London, Ontario to Toronto to study music at the famed Humber College music program. There followed decades of work in the GTA leading and performing in his dance band, jazz groups, and a variety of specialty acts including Dixieland, Oktoberfest, Country, and many other themed acts.

During these years, Tom lived in Mississauga with his dear wife Anne, and raised his three boys Tommy, Cole, and Lucas.

Tom also taught during this time, focusing on his weekly guitar workshop and repertoire development classes at Humber College. He later spent several years teaching music in the private school system.

Tom and Anne now live in Grand Bend Ontario, where Tom continues to perform, grow, and develop his guitar skills.

 

 Pam Appel – Stand Up Comedy 

Pam started her comedy career at Yuk Yuk’s in Toronto in 1986. Her style of humor encompasses a combination of old fashioned story telling infused with keen observation and witty commentary. Covering topics ranging from a simple trip to the Wal-Mart or Costco to personal stories about family and marriage, with a few comments on current events thrown in for good measure there’s something for everyone to relate to. You can catch Pam’s upcoming performances this fall at the “Connect 4 Life” Comedy Fundraiser Saturday September 29th and the “Canadian Spinal Research Organization” Comedy Night in October. Pam has also been asked to participate in “America’s Got Talent” 2019 season. 

Zain Campbell aka Alphabreff

Growing up with a musician for a father, it was no surprise that Zain Campbell was playing the drums by the age of four and began producing his own music at twelve. By sixteen, he had already composed his first piano ballad. Zain cites his biggest inspirational influences to include the likes of Prince, Michael Jackson, Freddy Mercury, Stevie Wonder, 2pac and the Notorious B.I.G. which is evident in his EP titled “Theory of Love” that he released at nineteen years old.
 
Now, the twenty one year old award winning producer, rapper, singer and songwriter from Orillia, Ontario, has managed to create his own signature blend of soulful Hip-Hop and R&B to smooth rhythms that captivatingly entice his audiences. Zain hopes to inspire youth through his creative expression, providing mentorship and endeavouring to spark meaningful change in the community, one person  at a time.



Heather Christine – Adult Contemporary, Smooth Jazz

Heather Christine is poised to make her mark on Canada’s music scene.  Both soulful and captivating, she has worked professionally for over 15 years as a vocalist, actress, dancer, and arts administrator. Heather dazzles audiences with her vivacious stage presence, expressive voice and engaging personality. Heather can be seen performing to audiences across Canada paying tribute to the iconic Country Music Star Patsy Cline and legendary Songstress Karen Carpenter in Bill Culp’s Theatre Productions. This Fall Heather is set to release her new EP, Love in Colour featuring her original songs performed by leading musicians including Percussionist Mark Kelso, Bassist Collin Barrett and Pianist Anthony Panacci. In 2017 Heather toured across the West Coast of Canada with her husband Matt Zaddy in their musical duo, “River North”.

Music definitely runs in Heather’s family. She takes inspiration from her Great-Grandfather, notable Jazz Musician Jimmy Kerr, an accomplished Saxophonist and Composer. Jimmy performed with the likes of Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Max Roach and Dizzy Gillespie. In 2017 Heather co-wrote the City of Mississauga’s Official Summer Anthem, We Are the North with her band From Far and Wide. We Are the North is a song of hope, unity and freedom, celebrating Mississauga’s diverse cultural population. 

 
Jennifer Cortez aka The Prof – Eclectic Tropical (Reggae/Latin and Rock)

In addition to being a college professor, “The Prof” is an Ecuadorian/Canadian recording artist & songwriter. Her style is Eclectic Tropical, Fusions of Reggae, Latin & Rock. The Prof's inspiration into music came from her Ecuadorian roots, from her mother and grandmother, who recorded and released their own vinyl record in Ecuador.

The Prof released a tropical inspired album this past June entitled, “Out of Office”, a feel-good album based on summer vacation, romance, travel and love. Tracks include "Hypnotic Dance" a sensual vibe with a fusion of bachata & rock, “Peek-A-Boo” a reggae-style vacation anthem and other tracks of reggae & rock. Carl Jung – Guitarist

Carl Jung is a 17 year old guitarist who has been playing guitar for nine years.  He has participated in numerous events held by the Merriam School of Music that includes Music Festival 2018 and Music Studiofest 2018. He has really enjoyed playing for audiences during Open Mic Live at the Living Arts Centre and at local cafes in his free time.  He was thrilled to have been selected for the Best of Open Mic Live and would like to thank Tom Taylor, the Living Arts Centre and the Mississauga Arts Council for the opportunity.

Carl has been inspired by many artists including his guitar teacher, Mark Harry. Mr. Harry has encouraged Carl to explore his love of music and to look for opportunities to share his gift of playing the guitar. Other inspirations for Carl include: Kotaro Oshio, Sungha Jung, Andrew York and many more. He plans to continue to develop his skills and would like to become part of the community of talented group of artists in Mississauga.


Elisa Malatesta – Opera Singer

After 12 years of working in the business world, Elisa decided to commit to singing full time and bring the joy of music to people’s celebrations.   In 2016, founded Malatesta Opera Events, a Toronto company that specializes in stunning opera performances for dedicated events such as weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, charities, etc. This year Elisa recorded her second EP album titled Beauty Passion Voice.  A crossover album with a mixture of opera, musical theatre, duets, and traditional Italian songs.  It will be released and available for sale in September.  Please visit her website at www.malatestaoperaevents.com for more information. 

 

 

Phase Three – Classic Rock 

Chuck, John and Nyanna were initially recruited into their local Church Contemporary Band called "Free Spirit" (Phase One). It didn't take long before the guys were backing up performers at Nyanna's venue for Songwriters held monthly across York Region (Phase Two). All original all the time was the theme of these events and Chuck & Nyanna developed many of their own original songs over these years. Needing to explore the harmonies and rhythms that were developing in the music the trio added cover songs to their repertoire and PHASE THREE was born.



Eran Rozen – Fusion 

Eran Rozen lives in Oakville, where he is an active music teacher and performing artist. He has been playing the piano since the age of 5 and has an A.R.C.T. and a Master’s degree in Piano Performance. In 2017, Eran wrote a full-length solo album named “Catharsis”, which is an eclectic combination of ballades, hard rock songs and instrumental tracks fusing classical and contemporary sounds. His lyrics are emotionally charged and present a realistic, yet melodramatic narrative on his life and the lives of those around him. Eran has enjoyed success both as a singer-songwriter and as an interpreter of other people’s music, and is intent on following up with another album. He has performed music in pretty much any genre: Classical, jazz, musical theatre, rock, pop and others. As of this year, he is a member of the Toronto-based Canadian Men’s Chorus.

 

Pawel Szczepanek – Jazz

Pawel Szczepanek began his journey in singing when he was about 8 years old. From then on he took up lessons in violin, then moved into guitar and finally stuck with piano. Through these years he was also apart of Mavo Academy, taught under Magda Papierz who has made him into the type of performer he is today. She took him under her wing for about 10 years performing in various shows and cabarets. As a result, he has gained a lot of experience on stage and in various genres and styles of music and acting. Pawel continuously takes private lessons from Magda Papierz and Kinga Mitrowska to make sure that his vocals stay up to par. Pawel also attended and graduated Cawthra Park Secondary School in the Regional Arts Program as a Drama Major and has learned the various techniques and professionalism of an actor. In this school he has been in various productions such as “Ragtime” in which he played the lead role of “Father”. Currently, he is studying at the University of Toronto and working hard toward a degree in Criminology. Although working hard in his studies, he still aspires to follow his dream of becoming a famous vocalist one day. His next upcoming performance will be a cabaret in October of 2018, in the John Paul the Second Cultural Centre.

 

Majd Zahra – Electro Flamenco 

Majd is a guitarist, singer and dancer living out his dream as a performing artist. He is inspired by a previous dream that almost didn't happen due to living through the circumstances of war.  This led Majd to pick up his guitar and begin to write songs that expressed the hardships he endured to achieve that dream. Flamenco being a musical style that’s deeply connected to struggle and determination immediately became an inspiration to him and he has been working tirelessly to perfect this art form. He has expanded his passion for Flamenco and has been creating his own original songs and tunes in this style.
