Experience the timeless stories of Mississauga’s First People in a live theatre performance of new contemporary music and dance! FIRST re-tells the creation story of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation as depicted in their magnificent Kiinwi Dabaadjmowin (Our Story) mural, created by respected Indigenous artists Philip Cote and Tracey Anthony, assisted by Rebecca Baird and students Eric LaForme, Rachele King and Jocelyn Hill. Written by composer Nancy Walker and librettist Steven Campbell, FIRST is sung and spoken with piano accompaniment and includes contemporary Indigenous dance by the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation Dancers and a dramatic video backdrop of stunning imagery from the mural and the natural world by David A. Moses.

FIRST is produced and presented by The Harmony Collaboration in collaboration with the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation and with the support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, as part of the LAC Presents Partner series.

Harmony’s collaborating cultural practitioners and artists include New Credit Cultural Committee Co-chair Carolyn King, composer and music director Nancy Walker, librettist and stage director Steven Campbell, video designer and director David A. Moses of Six Nations of the Grand River, Anishinaabe artist and choreographer Cathie Jamieson and media coordinator Kaytee Dalton of New Credit First Nation. Translations by educator and traditional language speaker James Shawana. Symbolic headpieces and props designed by Kiinwi Dabaadjmowin mural artist Philip Cote and created by Gabriella Caruso of Red Pepper Spectacle. Stage management by Ashley Bomberry of Six Nations of the Grand River. Soloists include Ojibwe mezzo-soprano Joanna Burt, Cree baritone Everett Morrison, tenor Jeremy Tozer and soprano Mara Nesrallah. FIRST’s chorus of Humber College Music alumni is directed by voice department head Lisa Martinelli. Cathie Jamieson leads the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation Dancers. Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation Band Members play the roles of the Child, the Grandfathers, Eagle, Wolf, and the Animals of the Flood.

The Harmony Collaboration acknowledges that we live and work on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation. The creation and development of FIRST is inspired by a vision of greater cultural understanding in our shared future.
