The Next Big Thing showcases exciting new work from students and recent graduates of post-secondary art and craft programs in Canada, selected through an open call. The works range from highly realistic to abstract to functional, yet common threads run through the exhibition in the artists’ approaches to materials and conceptual content. Whether the artists use traditional or non-traditional materials, each carefully considers how the materials support the meaning of the work, and there is strong sense of the artist’s hand and physicality of making. The works are also connected by a deep thoughtfulness, which is demonstrated in references to history, reflections on displacement and adaptation, commentary on our relationship to the environment, and the construction of narratives. Take note of these young artists: they are ones to watch and may be the next big thing.
